Bishop Joshua H. K Banda

Presiding Bishop for Africa

Bishop Joshua H.K. Banda is the Senior Pastor of Northmead Assembly of God (NAOG) a thriving and vibrant mission-minded Church of 2000 members located in the Northmead Suburb of Lusaka, Zambia’s capital city.

Prior to assuming this pastorate in 1995, he was the Principal of Trans-Africa Theological College (TTC) in Kitwe, Zambia’s Copper belt province, for 5 years, after which he was appointed Chairperson of the College Board of Governors until 2003. Bishop Banda, who until March 2007 was Secretary for the Southern Africa Assemblies of God Association (SAAGA), is also the Deputy Chief Bishop Assistant superintendent) of the Pentecostal Assemblies of God–Zambia, a growing Fellowship of over 1400 churches nation-wide.

He responded to the gospel of Jesus Christ at the age of 14 and begun full-time service for God at 18, shortly after mandatory military service. Now 46 years old and in his 27th year of Christian ministry, Bishop Banda has travelled widely in Africa and abroad, preaching and teaching in notable interdenominational settings, universities, colleges and international conferences.

He currently presents the gospel on The Liberating Truth, a weekly Television production of Northmead Assembly, on the Zambian National TV (ZNBC) reaching an audience of approximately 5 million people in both urban and rural Zambia. The programme also aired for some years on a private Satellite channel based in Swaziland, broadcasting to all of Africa, all of Europe and Saudi Arabia and is now on ROHI TV of South Africa.

The Bishop has become a notable and influential voice on national issues in Zambia and is presently Chairperson of the General Constitutional Principles Committee of a 500 member statutory National Constitutional Conference, mandated by the Zambian Parliament to examine, debate and adopt public proposals to alter the Zambian constitution recently newly drafted by a Presidential appointed Commission.

Dr.Banda has, for many years now, become a highly sought after international conference speaker. Distinctly evident also, is his passion for a holistic gospel approach, which has seen him catalyze key national Church responses to social issues including HIV/AIDS, relief work, the rehabilitation of commercial sex workers, and the rescue of street children into safe homes. This latter effort resulted in the founding of the Lazarus Project (1999), an outreach and rehabilitation centre for street children, which is administered by his Wife, Gladys.

Dr. Banda is a founding Trustee and Chairperson of the Expanded Church Response (ECR), a registered Trust leading the Christian response against HIV/AIDS. He also oversees the Circle of Hope Clinic, a ministry of NAOG offering free anti-retroviral treatment to over 1900 AIDS patients monthly. He serves on several Boards of significant organisations including World Vision Zambia and is the current Chairman of the National AIDS Council of Zambia. He has also been a member of the Technical Advisory Group of Family Health International USA.

Dr Banda has studied at Trans-Africa Theological College (Kitwe, Zambia), Northwest University (Kirkland, USA), Cape Theological Seminary (Cape Town, RSA) and is presently pursuing PhD research (Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, Oxford , UK) on the Impacts of Congregation-based HIV/AIDS Programmes in Zambia, with a special focus on abstinence and marital fidelity. He is married to Gladys and they have four children: Linda (19), Ryan (16), Nathan (13) and Lisa (6) You can Contact Bishop Banda on email: This email address is being protected from spambots.
